It is a non-negotionable truth that reading makes you smarter. Well, it is my belief that reading is to the mind what exercising is to the body. So, for the time it takes you to read this page of The Shingle, I want you to try to use your body too. Firstly, decide where to sit. If you prefer a chair that’s fine, otherwise sit on the floor cross legged (or with straight legs forward, if you can!). Now sit tall: lift the crown of your head to the ceiling without poking your chin forward, pull your belly button to your spine without removing the natural curve of your back, lift your ribcage up and a bit forward without lifting your shoulders. Now, for the hard part…keep BREATHING while you read!
After moving to Gabriola only a year ago it is clear to me that I am home. Thank-you all for that. I have been amazed and impressed with the talented children and adults that I have taught dance to and inspired by the adults who have strengthened their bodies through Pilates. I also owe a huge thanks to Carol Martin who patiently and meticulously helped us find a little piece of paradise to call our own. Not only that but she helped me realize a life-long dream. I have a Home Studio. After almost 20 years of shlepping around mats and barres and sound equipment I finally have a place to rest my Dance slippers and it feels marvelous.
So, it is with great excitement that I am able to offer classes in my Studio now as well as through The Recreation Society. For Adults, there are 5 weekly Pilates class options. A ten class punch card is $100.00 and your eleventh class is free. Dance-wise I am offering three barre and stretch classes at my studio for $120 punch card or $12 a class. For those of you adults who think it’s too late or difficult to learn ballet, remember that even a bear can learn to dance!***Here’s the best deal*** Find 2 other people and shebang, you have a class for $10 each! You can pick your own times that work for you and I’ll train you in my studio. Private training packages are also available. (For scheduled class times see the previous blog post.)
For the kids, Kinderdance is Wednesday morning and I’m happy to pick up your Kindergartener from school and take them to their dance class at The Commons. Elementary aged children’s classes are conveniently Tuesday and Wednesday after school. As always, the kids will have opportunities to dance in performances throughout the community and if I have enough students, I would like to have a year end recital on June 12th. For more details scroll down or give me a call at 8538.
Pilates and dance help to develop the body uniformly, correct wrong postures, restore physical vitality, invigorate the mind, and elevate the spirit. My goal is to have you thinking about how you are standing while brushing your teeth or how you are picking up your child, or how you are sitting while reading The Shingle…or this blog.
